▲유타대 아시아캠퍼스의 학생 선발 기준은 어떻게 되나요? 또, 한국과 미국의 교육 시스템 차이에 대해 어떻게 생각하시나요.
- 우리는 솔트레이크 홈 캠퍼스와 동일한 높은 입학 기준을 적용합니다. 학생들은 일정한 학업 성취도와 언어 능력을 갖춰야 합니다. 우리는 공부의 질적인 부분에 중점을 두어 학생들을 선발합니다. 학업 외에도 다양한 활동에 참여한 학생들을 우대합니다. 한국 학생들은 교육에 있어 매우 목표지향적이라는 점이 눈에 띕니다. 반면, 미국 학생들은 교육 외에도 다양한 비교과 활동에 참여하는 경향이 있습니다.

-유타대는 글로벌 교육의 중요성을 인식하고 한국 및 아시아의 학생들과 협력하여 연구와 학문을 더 발전시키고자 하는 목적으로 아시아캠퍼스를 설립하게 되었습니다. 유타대는 또한 이태규 교수를 시작으로 한국과의 오랜 역사적 관계를 가지고 있습니다. 이태규 교수의 지도 아래 많은 한국 학생들이 유타대학교로 오게 되었고, 이를 통해 우리 대학과 한국 사이에 강한 연결고리가 형성되었습니다. 이태규 교수의 역할은 유타대가 한국에 캠퍼스를 설립하는 데 큰 영향을 미쳤습니다.

유타대 가교 역할 이태규 교수…캠퍼스 설립 인연
유타대학교는 1850년 미국 유타주에서 설립돼 미국 및 전세계에서 최상위권 대학으로 꼽힌다. 유타대 아시아캠퍼스는 인천글로벌캠퍼스 창립 멤버로 탄생했으며 2014년 9월부터 본격적인 인재양성에 돌입했다. 현재 게임학, 도시계획학, 커뮤니케이션학, 심리학, 영화영상학, 전기공학, 컴퓨터공학, 정보시스템학, 회계학 등 9개 학부과정과 커뮤니케이션학 석사과정을 운영중이다. 세계 각지에서 모집된 학생들은 유타대 아시아캠퍼스에서 3년, 유타주 솔트레이크시티 캠퍼스에서 1년 동안 수학하고 학위를 받는다.
유타대와 한국과의 인연은 화학 분야에 양자역학을 처음 도입하고 뛰어난 학문적 업적을 인정받아 1960년대 노벨상 후보에 올랐던 세계적 화학자 이태규 교수와의 인연으로 거슬러 올라간다.
1902년에 태어난 이태규는 경성고등보통학교(경기고의 전신)를 졸업하고 일본 히로시마 고등사범학교를 거쳐 1924년 교토제국대학 화학과에 진학했다. 1931년 조선인 최초로 화학 박사 학위를 받았다.
이 교수는 해방 직후 일본에서 귀국해 서울대의 전신인 당시 경성제국대학 이공학부장, 서울대학교 문리대 학장을 역임하고 조선화학회(대한화학회)를 설립해 초대회장으로 활동하며 후학을 양성했다. 그는 1948년 미국 유타대 교수로 부임해 반응속도론, 액체이론 등에 관한 우수한 논문을 발표해 국제학계에서 크게 주목을 받았다. 이 같은 연구업적에 힘입어 이 교수는 1965년 노벨상 추천위원으로 위촉된 데 이어 4년 뒤 노벨상 후보로 추천돼 한국인의 위상을 높였다.
이 교수는 미국에서 태평양과학협회 이사(1974년), 이론물리센터 소장(1975년) 등으로 활동하다 칠순을 넘긴 나이에 한국과학기술원 명예교수로 초빙돼 후진 양성에 힘썼다. 그는 한국 현대 화학의 기반을 구축하고 한국 화학의 초석을 다진 공을 인정받아 과학자로는 처음으로 국립현충원에 안장됐다.

SHIN, Yong-Suk’ Global Village in Incheon (14) – University of Utah Asia Campus
The University of Utah Asia Campus, a proud founding member of the Incheon Global Campus located in the Songdo International City, embarked on its journey to nurture talent since September 2014. It presently offers nine undergraduate courses, including Accounting, Communication, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Film and Media Arts, Games, Information Systems, Psychology, and Urban Ecology, along with a Master of Communication program. The University of Utah, established in 1850 in the state of Utah, USA, is globally recognized as a premier institution. Students at the Asia Campus complete three years of their education in Korea and one year at the Salt Lake City campus for their degree completion.
In a conversation with SHIN, Yong-Suk, Advisor for International Cooperation at the IFEZ, Gregory C. Hill, the Chief Administrative Officer of the University of Utah Asia Campus, reminisced about Professor Lee, Tae-Gyu, a globally acclaimed theoretical chemist who joined the University of Utah faculty in 1948. Hill expressed profound admiration for the longstanding ties between the University of Utah and Korea, underscoring the campus’s zeal for educational excellence.
Q: What are the student selection criteria at the University of Utah Asia Campus, and how do you perceive the differences between the Korean and American educational systems?
A: We apply the same rigorous admission standards as our Salt Lake City main campus, requiring students to demonstrate significant academic achievement and language proficiency. Our focus is on the quality of education, giving preference to students who actively participate in various activities beyond their academic pursuits. Korean students often exhibit a goal-oriented approach to their studies, whereas American students tend to engage in a wider range of extracurricular activities.
Q: What motivated the establishment of a campus in Korea, particularly in Incheon?
A: We established the University of Utah Asia Campus as we understand the importance of global education and wanted to work with students in Korea and Asia to further our research and academia. University of Utah also has a long history of relationship which stems back to Professor Lee Tae-Gyu, a world-renowned chemist. Under his guidance, numerous Korean students have attended the University of Utah, thereby strengthening the bond between our university and Korea. Professor Lee’s significant influence was a pivotal factor in our decision to establish a campus in Korea.
Q: What opportunities and programs does the University of Utah Asia Campus offer its students?
A: We offer a wide array of academic and social opportunities to our students. For instance, they can participate in research projects, contribute to community service, and engage in volunteer activities. Furthermore, we support our students in securing internships and job opportunities, encouraging them to partake in diverse activities both within and outside the university.
Q: Could you introduce some specialized programs at the University of Utah that might not be well-known among domestic students?
A: Certainly. Our university offers a course focused on game design and development, highly regarded as one of the best in the United States. In fact, the BS in Games at the University of Utah is one of the top three programs in the United States. In the curriculum for the University of Utah game major, students take classes across various disciplines, including computer engineering, graphic design, video game, and 3D animation. This multidisciplinary approach ensures that they are well-prepared for competitive careers not only in the gaming industry but also in other sectors.
Q: The game-related learning program sounds unique. Can you elaborate on it?
A: The University of Utah Asia Campus is equipped with cutting-edge technology and facilities. We provide high-performance computer labs, the latest software, and a range of game development tools to support hands-on learning and project work. Collaboration under the guidance of faculty and industry experts allows students to develop the skills required by the industry, fostering a creative and innovative learning environment.
Q: What is life like at the University of Utah Asia Campus, and how is campus life and culture shaped?
A: Our campus boasts a diverse and inclusive culture. Students have the opportunity to study alongside peers from various countries, broadening their global perspective. Regular cultural events, seminars, and workshops are organized to facilitate interaction and learning among students with diverse backgrounds. We strive to provide an environment that supports both academic and personal growth.
Q: How does the University of Utah collaborate with the industry?
A: Our ‘CMI Asia’ program, a cornerstone of our industry collaboration, focuses on supporting biotech startups in Songdo for global market entry. We assist these companies in obtaining U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval and connecting with global finance partners.
Q: I’ve heard that the University of Utah places a high value on social contribution and volunteerism.
A: We deeply value social contribution and volunteerism. Our efforts to support community engagement help students develop character and consider the broader society. These activities contribute significantly to student success. We are committed to providing our students with numerous opportunities and support for social engagement and volunteer work, both in Songdo, Incheon, and internationally.

The University of Utah, established in 1850 in the state of Utah, USA, is recognized as one of the top-tier universities both in the United States and globally. The University of Utah Asia Campus emerged as a founding member of the Incheon Global Campus and has been actively engaged in cultivating talent since September 2014. The campus currently offers nine undergraduate programs in Accounting, Communication, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Film and Media Arts, Games, Information Systems, Psychology, and Urban Ecology, along with a Master of Communication program. Students recruited from around the world spend three years at the University of Utah Asia Campus and one year at the Salt Lake City campus in Utah to complete their degrees.
The connection between the University of Utah and Korea dates back to the illustrious Professor Lee Tae-Gyu, a world-renowned chemist who was among the first to introduce quantum mechanics to the field of chemistry and was recognized for his significant academic achievements by being nominated for the Nobel Prize in the 1960s.
Born in 1902, Lee Tae-kyu graduated from Gyeongseong High School (the predecessor of Kyonggi High School) and went on to attend Hiroshima Higher Normal School in Japan before entering the Department of Chemistry at Kyoto Imperial University in 1924. In 1931, he became the first Korean to receive a doctoral degree in chemistry.
Professor Lee, who returned to Korea from Japan after liberation, served as the dean of science and engineering at Kyungsung Imperial University (the precursor to Seoul National University), the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Seoul National University, and founded the Korean Chemical Society, serving as its first chairman and nurturing future generations. In 1948, he joined the faculty of the University of Utah, where his outstanding publications on reaction speed and liquid theory garnered significant international attention. His research achievements led to his appointment as a Nobel Prize nominating committee member in 1965, and he was later recommended as a candidate for the prize, elevating the stature of Koreans in the global academic community.
Professor Lee continued to contribute to the scientific world as a director of the Pacific Science Association (1974) and as the -director of the Theoretical Physics Center (1975) in the United States before being invited to serve as an honorary professor at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) well into his seventies, focusing on nurturing the next generation. Recognized for laying the foundations of modern chemistry in Korea and establishing the cornerstone of Korean chemistry, Professor Lee was the first scientist to be honored with burial at the National Cemetery, acknowledging his monumental contributions to the field.
